Title of Book: The Winds of Sonoma By Nikki Arana
Nikki Arana did it with her debut novel. Many authors postpone it until they’re well into their publishing career. Mrs. Arana wrote and successfully had published the book of her heart. The Winds of Sonoma is a novel based on Nikki and her husband, Antonio’s, romance and courtship. Thirty years and two grown sons later, she picked up her pen and began the Regalo Grande series. “She laid wood on the fire. The morning sun was just beginning to light the countryside that surrounded Guadalajara. It wouldn’t be long before daylight awakened her children sleeping under the tarp that stretched across the lowest branches of the roble tree. She placed the rusted barrel lid across the stones, just above the flames, and patted tortilla dough between her palms. Her lips moved in silent prayer as she cooked. She prayed and listened, waiting for the whisper of the wind. One by one she laid the tortillas on the lid. When both sides were lightly browned, she took them from the fire, putting the best ones on a worn cloth to her right, the others on a tin platter to her left. “This was the day and the hour. She’d known it would come, as it had before, as it would again. First it had been her husband, now it was her oldest son. Soon it would be his brother. The birth of each of her ten children was a blessing and a curse, the joy they brought her allowed only for a measured time. Each would learn what she had learned as a child, there would never be enough food or enough work or enough money to care for the family. There was only the border and the coyotes who knew about the tunnels and passes where a Mexican could run and crawl and hide, straining toward that desperate hope to the north.” Excerpt from The Winds of Sonoma Like a weaver masters his shuttle, Nikki Arana created an interlaced tapestry of words and images. There’s the romance between Angelica and Antonio, she a daughter of privilege who determines to assist the illegal immigrants by use of her legal skills, and he a humble Mexican who speaks no English and yet possesses an exceptional way with horses. There’s finely developed characters such as Poppy, the elderly Greek immigrant who has loved and supported Angelica throughout her life. His devout faith has been his cornerstone, and he has passed this rich inheritance onto Angelica. Antonio shares this faith. And there’s the nuances of faith woven throughout the book, such as in the wind that passes over when Angelica comes to a moment of crisis in her belief. The Winds of Sonoma is a lovely book. Your heart will be warmed once you have opened its pages. The Regalo Grande series is comprised of The Winds of Sonoma, In the Shade of the Jacaranda, and The Fragrance of Roses. |
