Title of Book: With this Ring, I'm Confused Now that I’m standing in the bridal boutique, something has snapped. Girlfriend, I want satin, yards and yards of it! …I want sequins and crystals and a bum-bow the size of Brazil, and a train that practically explodes onto the scene. I want something that screams I’m the bride! Lost in a snow flurry of white. Bring on winter, baby! Ashley Stockingdale is getting married! Excerpt from With this Ring, I’m Confused. With this Ring, I’m Confused is the third book in Kristin Billerbeck’s hilarious chick lit series starring Ashley Stockingdale. After some rugged going in the dating world in the first two books, Ashley has found the man of her dreams and is headed down the aisle. And then Kevin’s family comes to help. Ashley is not a girl lacking in vision for her wedding and it definitely doesn’t include Confederate soldiers and a Scarlette O’Hara dress. It looks like the only way she’s going to keep peace in her fiancé’s family is to be a doormat. A doormat doesn’t suit Ashley in the least and if Kevin doesn’t know that, then Ashley is marrying the wrong man. Billerbeck starts off with a bang when Ashley’s soon to be sister-in-law informs her that the family expects the wedding to be a Gone with the Wind reproduction and anything less will shame Kevin. The book descends into madness from there. Ashley has a demanding job, an overworked fiancé she loves with all her heart but she never sees, a friend who is dating a rat, a great aunt throwing her the world’s tackiest wedding shower, and her old boyfriend just became her co-worker and he seems interested again. With this Ring roars along with Ashley careening from one crisis to another, trying to curb her sarcastic sense of humor to maintain in-law peace. All the while she’s more than a little afraid that she’s signing on to a lifetime of letting Kevin’s mother run their lives. Billerbeck comes up with the most twisted, laugh out loud notions in Ashley’s rebellious, brainy, sassy head. I barely had a chance to catch my breath as Ashley, her soon to be sister-in-law Emily, and Kevin’s toxic mother clashed and bickered their way through this book. All the while gorgeous Dr. Kevin is working so hard he just barely has time to pop in, make Ashley remember what she’s fighting for, and disappear back into the hospital. Fans of the earlier books want Ashley to end up with Kevin bad, but more than that, we don’t want our girl to give up one ounce of her confident, opinionated self. And if that means Kevin has to go, then so be it. With this Ring is written in the style made popular by Bridget Jones Diary. With Ashley’s sharp internal honesty contrasting constantly with her external good behavior. Nearly every word is a gem. Picking an excerpt to include at the beginning of this review was hard because it all flows along so fast, seasoned with Billerbeck’s references to designer clothes and Ashley’s over-heated charge card. The end is a payoff that makes the whole wild ride worth the trip. |
