Title of Book: Original Sin By Brandt Dodson
BACK COVER: A woman is murdered. Her nephew is arrested. Open and shut case, or is it? When FBI agent Colton Parker is fired from the force, his first job as a private detective begins with the tragic murder of Emma Caine—an upstanding high school guidance counsellor, found dead with all the evidence pointing to her nephew, Billy Caine. His girlfriend, Angie Howe, doesn’t believe he did it. Colton has his doubts. As the rocky investigation picks up steam, Colton clashes with everyone from local organized crime members to respected public officials. Along the way, he finds help and solace from an old friend—ace FBI agent Mary Christopher—whose influence might just help Colton figure out what’s wrong with this life and how to fix it. When the dust settles, Colton is satisfied that justice has been served and is ready to repair his relationship with Callie, his rebellious teenage daughter. And while they still struggle with issues of her mother’s death, Colton has discovered what lies beneath the surface of every turbulent relationship…hope. REVIEWER'S COMMENTS: Colton Parker is a mess. He is wallowing in grief over the loss of his wife. He has unintentionally estranged himself from his grieving daughter, sending her to live with her grandparents. His new business is not thriving… and Colton is a bitter man. When Angie Howe appears in his office, he takes her case, in spite of the fact she has no money to pay him—and cash is what he needs. But the more he investigates the murder of Emma Caine, the deeper he gets into a tangled web. Colton descends into a dark world of deceit, murder, and pornography, where he finds an easy outlet for his pent up anger. Hope is nearly swallowed up. Colton’s in-laws try desperately to shed some Light into Colton’s world, but he won’t have it. His anger toward God over the loss of his wife overwhelms his every thought. But as Colton turns his back on God, he inadvertently turns away from his daughter too. When it seems hope is truly lost, Colton finds a way through the mystery of Emma Caine and through the misery of his own life. Brandt Dodson writes a gripping novel, a twisted tale that unravels slowly. The reader is trapped, anxious to find the truth of the matter along with Colton Parker. It is a brilliant mystery, but I was left feeling a bit bereft when the tale ended without more information about his relationship with his daughter or Colton’s spiritual life. I would hope for a sequel in which he develops a love for the Lord and a deeper bond with Callie, perhaps involving her in some way in his next case! A good read for any mystery lover! |
