A Daughter's Quest
By Lena Nelson Dooley

BACK COVER:
As he lies dying, Constance's father asks her to seek out a troubled friend of his from the war and tell him about God's love. Although she would rather stay with those she has known all her life, Constance obeys her father's wishes. She leaves her home in the mountains of Arkansas on a quest to find Jim Mitchell, reportedly living in Iowa.

Constance soon discovers that locating Jim will not be as easy as she had hoped, especially if she wants to avoid raising suspicions among the townsfolk of Browning City. And for reasons that escape her, the local blacksmith, Hans Van de Keift, seems to take her on as his special concern, shadowing her every step.

REVIEWER’S COMMENTS:

In A Daughter's Quest Constance Miller makes a promise to her dying father to find an old war friend of his. The promise is to try and convince Jim Mitchell to give back some gold he supposedly stole from the government and to tell him about God. In an effort to fulfill her promise, Constance travels from the mountain home she has always known in Arkansas to Browning City, Iowa.

Constance feels very alone when she arrives in Iowa. She has lost both of her parents and left the only home she has ever known. She quickly makes friends with Hans Van de Keift, the local blacksmith, and Jackson and Mary Reeves, the local pastor and his wife. Through Mary, she takes a job at the boardinghouse as a baker.

Constance seems to be accident prone and Hans is always there to rescue her beginning with her very first step into Browning City. She falls from the stagecoach into his arms and this begins their relationship.

Mrs. Dooley does a wonderful job of developing the relationships between Constance and Hans, Constance and Mary, and especially Constance and God. This is a beautiful and sweet love story not only of Hans and Constance but of the friendship between Constance and Mary and especially of Constance and her Saviour. Once again Lena Nelson Dooley describes the scenery in such a way that you feel as if you are there and when she described Constance baking biscuits I felt like I could smell them. .
