Title of Book: SAHM I Am SAHM I Am by Meredith Efken is the freshest, funniest thing to come along in Christian Fiction in a long time. A book consisting entirely of emails shared between a group of Stay-At-Home-Moms that fits into the Mom-Lit genre but stands apart with its wit and style. There is Dulcie whose husband travels for work. Dulcie adores her husband but can’t seem to avoid fighting with him on the rare occasion he’s home. Brenna, the city girl who married a farmer, loves her husband but her muddy, lonely new life has her confused about God’s will. Zelia is an artist whose children are making a mess under her creative home schooling methods, and her husband doesn’t like living in chaos. Then there's Jocelyn, whose athletic, active son is getting hurt too often and doesn’t heal up as quickly as he should. Some serious problems are mixed in with lighter fare such as a little boy whose head gets stuck in a cat scratching post, and a group leader, Rosalyn, who is so perfect it’s hard for the other ladies not to reach through the computer screen and strangle her. A small group of ladies in SAHM I Am form a smaller group, rather subversive in their way, to gossip about Rosalyn and share their imperfections, which they don’t dare to admit to Rosalyn. These very different ladies become close friends without ever meeting. We hear about Internet chat rooms and it always sounds naughty, but there are lots of email loops that are great connections for people with like minds who are far apart. This book is hilarious. The emails are sometimes two pages, sometimes two words. Each of the smaller group's members, which calls itself Green Eggs and Ham, comment on the larger group. There is something about the way Efken writes it that is just addictive. Usually this kind of compulsive reading is left to fast moving action/adventure novels, but each email connects to the next and it’s almost impossible to put the book down. I can’t imagine anyone not loving this book, but it’s a special delight to someone who is familiar with email loops because it is such a perfect recreation of those groups, except for the brilliant humor that never ends. |
