Title of Book: Deep in the Heart of Trouble By Deeanne Gist BACK COVER: Essie Spreckelmeyer is the last woman anyone in Corsicana, Texas, expected to see with a man on her arm. Independent and outspoken, she’s known more for riding bicycles in outrageous bloomers than for catching a man’s eye. And the last man who seems willing to give her a second glance is Tony Morgan, newly hired at Spreckelmeyer’s oil company. The disinherited son of an oil baron, Tony wants most to restore his name and regain his lost fortune—not to butt heads with a headstrong blond who confounds, contradicts, and confuses him. With the two of them clashing at every turn, he’s at the end of his rope in dealing with her independent—and stubborn—streak. Just as civility between them seems as unlikely as Essie becoming a properly mannered lady, they somehow find themselves Deep in the Heart of Trouble. REVIEWER’S COMMENTS: She chases snakes. She carries a pistol, and teaches other women how to shoot. She works the Sullivan Oil Company with her father. And she rides a bicycle—with BLOOMERS on! There is nothing proper about Essie Spreckelmeyer! The folks of Corsicana, Texas, probably are not shocked by anything she does anymore. At thirty-four she is the town spinster living with her widowed father. She is a lovely woman with a beautiful Christian spirit, but perhaps she’s a bit much for any man to handle. Tony Morgan isn’t looking to “handle” any woman. He is just looking to create a life after being disinherited in his father’s will. The shock of finding that his half brother has inherited all of Morgan Oil, as well as control over his mother and sister Anna, is more than Tony can take. He leaves Beaumont, Texas, and heads to Corsicana. If he can just remain anonymous and find a job as a “toolie” at Sullivan Oil, he can begin rebuilding the ruins of his life. Trouble brews as Tony hides his identity, and Essie hides a secret of her own. The two clash as Essie continues in her headstrong ways, and Tony finds romance interfering with his plans. Deeanne Gist has written a charming, witty story. She has cleverly interwoven Texas oil history with humor and colourful characters. But Gist’s greatest gift to readers in this story is spiritual truth. She touches on such topics as honesty, integrity, chastity, and purity. Her characters are real people, though, struggling with sin, and overcoming by God’s grace. Deep in the Heart of Trouble was a pleasure to read, a joyous “escape”. OUR REVIEWER: Jody Miller, like most women, wears many hats. Her favourites are Wife, Mother, Bible study leader, and avid reader! |
