The Measure Of A Lady
By Deeanne Gist
200739: The Measure of a Lady

In 1849 San Francisco, men were rushing for more than just gold—eligible women, a.k.a. “sunbonnets”. One such woman, Rachel Van Buren, has just arrived from the East and like it or not, will be staying. Her father having died on the voyage over, Rachel is left in charge of her two younger siblings—fifteen-year-old Lissa and fourteen-year-old Michael.

In a tizzy surrounded by googly-eyed, drooling men--each competing to be the one to whisk Rachel away to cook him a hot meal and clean his long johns--Johnnie Parker, saloon owner, gambler, and ex-missionary comes to the rescue.

The perfectly refined lady, Rachel would no more accept a gift from a man than shoot him through the eyes. It wouldn’t be proper. In a lawless city bent on decadence, Rachel fights to maintain propriety and integrity, but horror of all horrors, what she’s fighting most is her own physical desire toward Johnnie.

Hypnotized by the glitter and glamour of nightlife, sister Lissa jumps in with both feet. To Rachel’s complete shock, Lissa bites the forbidden apple, throwing to the wind all that is moral and decent. Lissa now a woman of ill-repute, Rachel can no longer associate with her... or can she? God forgives and restores fellowship. Can Rachel?

Michael is also bent on assimilating himself to those “lesser” than he, and Rachel is helpless to stop him. He’s one more casualty for the wicked city to tally to its high score. It seems Rachel is the only upstanding person left, and deeming herself too good to socialize with sinners, she is lonely in her chaste world.

Johnnie, preacher gone bad, is floundering in the grey area between right and wrong, and to his chagrin, Rachel takes it upon herself to set him straight. If only he could have her without the strict morals attached…

His physical appeal draws Rachel like a magnet, and on more than one occasion, they go way beyond what any godly woman should allow.

With a good dose of sizzle, Gist has taken the Christian romance novel to a new level. However, she balances out the cat and mouse story with enough moral debate to stimulate the reader’s mind. Sweeping away the unessential rules and regulations of religion, Gist reveals, through Scripture, God’s love for the sinner and His desire to see the Christian humbly reaching out and drawing them back to Him.

A colorful snapshot of this wild and unique portion of San Francisco history, I recommend The Measure of a Lady to anyone looking for a fun and engaging read. Only her second novel, Deeanne Gist has, once again, written a smash-hit novel.
