Title of Book: Hannah Rose Click on title in order to purchase your copy. By Louise M. Gouge Hannah Rose by Louise M. Gouge is as perfect a romance as you’re going to find. Hannah is caught in a love triangle between two attractive men. She is trapped in the middle of the life and death cause of slavery. She’s a widow who really isn’t over her husband yet. There is no hope for a happy ending except for True Love. Gouge has written a book that makes me smile to think of the premise. Hannah Rose is the widow of Captain Ahab. Gouge asks the question, “What would the sea captain who died trying to kill Moby Dick be like as a husband?” How did Gouge think of such a thing? It’s a fascinating look at the woman left behind when Ahab’s obsession kills him and the men on his ship. Hannah is reviled by the families of the people who lost loved ones on Ahab’s ship. She has a young son, Timothy, who is the image of his father. Hannah worries that the wrong influence could bring out the obsessive side of Timothy. So Hannah runs away. Leaving behind the cruelty of the sailors in Nantucket, she moves to Boston where the legend of Ahab lives on but she is unknown. There she is drawn into the abolitionist movement by an old friend. Hannah doesn’t want to break the law. Her gallant suitor Captain Longwood is attentive, attractive and charming. Captain Lazarus, an old friend who knows all her secrets, is the shoulder she leans on when her life hits rough waters. Hannah sees only kindness in Longwood. How can slavery be so bad? She learns that Lazarus is smuggling slaves out of the south and he wants to use her home to hide them. Hannah doesn’t want to break the law. If she’s arrested who will care for Timothy? She’s never given much thought to slavery. Right now, she’s busy raising her son, mourning her confusing husband and nursing a sick friend. She doesn’t have the energy to start smuggling slaves. I enjoyed Hannah Rose immensely. I started reading it without knowing what it was about – Moby Dick, huh? Hmmmmm…. It was terrific. It was one of those books that I just needed to be dragged away from. Then, while whatever urgent thing (it had to be urgent or I wouldn’t have put down the book) was going on, I’d think constantly of the book and getting back to it. It wasn’t that there was taut action going on or a serial killer coming closer to the heroine. It was just good. Completely engrossing. I rate Hannah Rose a whale (o.k. I had to say that, now didn’t I?) of a Sleep Robber. |
