By Robin Lee Hatcher

I was taken by surprise,,,I hadn't noticed another man’s looks since the day I met Andy back in 1950.

Andy…Oh, Andy. I miss you so much.

Gideon leaned forward on his chair. “Mrs. Haskins, I’d like to help you if I can.”

“Help me?” I whispered around the lump in my throat.

“Andy was the best kind of friend. The best friend I’ve ever had…When I heard about his death –

Excerpt from Beyond the Shadows.

Robin Lee Hatcher tackles a tough subject with great honesty in Beyond the Shadows. A widow, still grieving, finds comfort and, before she’s ready, that comfort turns to love.

The early part of the story, about a couple who are together for the wrong reasons is enough of a subject to explore. Now that they are married, they must go forward, but are they outside the will of God? How do they heal from their grief when there is guilt laced through the new relationship? How can a new husband fight the ghost of that perfect first love?

Hatcher is delving into a darker subject, though. Deborah discovers that she’s married to an alcoholic. Her new husband, Gideon, a sweet, sensitive charmer, turns to drinking when life gets unpleasant. Then he turns to drinking all the time.

Through Deborah, we watch the phases of living with an alcoholic. The denial, the lies, the bitterness and blame. Hatcher doesn’t let her characters off with easy answers, but she does offer hope in the end. As always her writing is compelling and her characters have depth. She doesn’t flinch from hard truths and she never forgets to entertain.

In an email to me, Robin Lee Hatcher said, “Because my life has been impacted by the alcoholism of a loved one, this story came from a deep place inside my heart. Only by God's grace have I walked this difficult road, and only by God's grace could I write this novel.”

Beyond the Shadows is an excellent, intense study of alcoholism and the price people sometimes have to pay for love.
