Title of Book: Daughter of Liberty, American Patriot Series #1 Click on the title in order to purchase your copy or view product details. By J.M. Hochstetler At mention of Lord Dartmouth, the British Secretary of State for the colonies, Elizabeth pretended to concentrate on folding bandages. “Percy said he has finally issued direct orders for Gage to seize the rebel’s munitions without further delay and to arrest anyone who has committed acts of treason and rebellions. Elizabeth stared at him, stunned. She had expected this, but the reality of it struck her like a blow in the pit of the stomach. “Oh, papa, if Gage tries that, it’s going to mean war.” Excerpt from Daughter of Liberty Daughter of Liberty is the first book in The American Patriot Series by J. M. Hochstetler. Hochstetler brings the American Revolution to life through the love of a beautiful rebel spy and a dashing British officer. Their relationship, doomed by the foundation of lies that stands between them, is too strong to fade and die. Elizabeth must decide if her feelings for a man are more important than her dreams of freedom. Jonathan must decide if the powerful attraction he has for the lovely young woman is more important than duty and honor. Daughter of Liberty tells the stories of the Battles of Lexington, Concord and Bunker Hill by setting Elizabeth and Jonathan into history alongside of British soldiers and American rebels. This is a dynamic way to teach history and I’ve long believed that history teachers in school should adopt good quality fiction as a tool to bring history alive for their students. We see the loyalty to King George that drives the British. We see the thirst for freedom in the oppressed revolutionaries. Hochstetler refers to the “Tea Party” in Boston and America’s defiant refusal to import over-taxed British goods when they are denied the rights of every British citizen. England ignored complaints and votes and emissaries for years as the discontent in once loyal America grew and fomented rebellion. Elizabeth and Jonathan’s love captures the birth of the revolution. They are there when the first shots are fired and two nations spilled their blood so brutally that war could no longer be avoided. Samuel Adams, Nathan Hale and George Washington are peripheral characters in the drama, with their inspiring speeches stirring the yearning for liberty in the rebels. With all this war and strife, Hochstetler still managed, within the unfolding events that will give birth to a new nation, to make the love story compelling and the personal price of freedom come alive. J. M. Hochstetler emailed me and said, “I decided to focus on the colonial era in general because of a very famous massacre that involved my ancestors during the French and Indian War. And especially after 9-11, I was concerned that few people today know much about the events that led to our independence as a nation. I decided to write this series to honor the servicemen and women of America and their families who have sacrificed so much over the years to safeguard our liberty and all we hold dear.” I thoroughly enjoyed reading Daughter of Liberty. I hope Hochstetler writes a novel about each major battle in the Revolution. I rate Daughter of Liberty a Sleep Robber. |
