By Karen Kingsbury

“Dear God…” [Sarah’s] words were a scratchy whisper. “Make the days come to life again, every moment. Please.”

If this was the last time she was going to remember, the last time she would sing her song, then someone had to hear it. Not just hear it but feel it-feel it in their hearts the way Sarah did.

God had promised her that much, hadn’t He?

A stranger needing encouragement, a doctor or a nurse…. Someone who would be changed by “Sarah’s Song.” The way she had been changed by it so long ago."

Excerpt from Sarah’s Song

Sarah’s Song by Karen Kingsbury is a beautiful Christmas story about a dying, old woman and a nurse who cares for her.

The old woman, Sarah, convinces the kind but overworked young nurse, Beth, to take the time to listen to a story that lasts twelve days. As Sarah’s story unfolds, twelve Christmas decorations are hung, one a day, on a tiny tree. Each ornament has it’s own story. Each day has a message that has strengthened Sarah over the years.

Sarah promises Beth that her story holds the secret for enduring love. Beth needs to hear this story now, as she contemplates ending her hollow marriage. She also cynically doubts that a sick old lady in a nursing home has anything important to share.

Sarah’s Song is the third in a series of Christmas books called the Red Gloves Series by Kingsbury.

In any great Christmas story, I’m always looking for what I think of as that ‘Linus Moment”. That’s the moment – and all enduring Christmas stories have them, when all the fooling around and disappointments finally collide, as they do in “It’s Christmas Charlie Brown” when Charlie Brown overwhelmed with frustration at a commercialized Christmas, yells to the sky, “What’s the point!” And Linus stands up straight and reads, “And there were shepherds watching over their flocks by night and an angel of the Lord appeared to them…”

That’s the point. Even books that aren’t overtly Christian have that moment.

The Grinch’s heart grew three sizes that day.

Rudolph with your nose so bright, won’t you guide my sleigh tonight.

What day is it, boy? – Why it’s Christmas day, Mr. Scrooge.

We are moved by those moments even if we’ve seen it all a thousand times – like I have the Charlie Brown Christmas Special.

Sarah’s Song has that moment. It’s a sweet, heartbreaking story throughout, but the end has this emotional punch that I dare anyone to read and escape unmoved.

It’s a tiny book, one you’ll read thinking you’ve picked up a little snack of a book, but it’s a full blown feast and an unqualified Sleep Robber.
