Title of Book: The Parting By Beverly Lewis BACK COVER: Nearly one hundred days have passed since the untimely death of Nellie Mae Fisher's beloved younger sister, Suzy, and Nellie dares again to dream of a future with handsome Caleb Yoder. But with rumors about Suzy still flying among the People, Nellie knows there are those who would prefer to keep the young couple apart...including Caleb's own father. Meanwhile, a recent drought has sown the seeds of discord among the farmers of once-peaceful Honeybrook, and a growing number are demanding tractors and other forbidden modern conveniences. When a revival adds to the tension, passions flare. With the Old Order community pushed to the breaking point, Nellie and Caleb find their families-and themselves- in the midst of what threatens to become an impossible divide. REVIEWER’S COMMENTS: The Parting is the story of a close knit Amish community being torn apart by adversity and change. The story is mainly told through the life of Nellie Fisher. The book starts out right away asking the hard question of why do bad things happen to good people. Nellie is dealing with guilt and grief after the death of her younger sister earlier in the summer as well as her new romance with Caleb Yoder. The community is also recovering from a failed harvest that they believe is a sign from God. There are many story-lines interwoven throughout this book that tell the story of the revival that hit the Amish community and the split that occurred between those desiring modern conveniences and those that wanted to follow the Old Ways. Through the lives of the characters Ms. Lewis shows how this affected the Amish families and the pain that came about as a result of "the partings" from family, friends, traditions, and customs. This is a fabulous book that will not only be a great read but will also add to your knowledge of the history of the Amish people. Ms. Lewis does a wonderful job of explaining what the Amish believe in terms of their faith. I couldn't put the book down from the first page. Her descriptions of their lives made me yearn for a simpler life. I am now baking everyday after reading the descriptions of Nellie's baked goods! .
