When the Nile Runs Red
By DiAnn Mills

BACK COVER:

Paul Farid, who once persecuted the southern Sudanese, now loves the weary people whose lives have been destroyed by ward.

Colonel Ben Alier has led his battle-hardened soldiers for two decades against the north, yet he pursues a relationship with his son even as his own demons pursue him.

Dr. Larson Kerr Farid works long hours caring for the sick, but fatigue and worry about her husband are taking their toll. And she’s just learned something that will make everything more complicated.

These three face constant danger as tensions escalate between the north and south, and as Paul’s family schemes to kill him and Larson. Will Paul and Larson bridge the gap that seems to grow between them? And will Ben find peace as more than a soldier?

REVIEWER’S COMMENTS:

When the Nile Runs Red picks up right where the action and terror in Sudan left off in When the Lion Roars . Paul, the missionary pilot, and Larson, the American doctor, are now married with a baby on the way. Larson is torn. She wants to stay in Sudan to help its people, but what is best for their child? A stray bullet could find her any day, not to mention those aimed straight at her. Knowing Paul will send her out of the country, she keeps the secret from him.

He only notices that Larson is ill and distancing herself from him, which greatly concerns him, but there is another pressing issue that requires his attention. His brother, Nizam, who has sworn to kill him, has now contacted him claiming to want to meet in order to learn more about Christ. It must be a trap, but what if it’s not? What if he lets pass an opportunity to share the gospel with his brother?

Colonel Ben Alier’s back has been hurting him more than usual. Actually, the pain is downright crippling. Could it be something more serious? Maybe even deadly? Thoughts of death press him to locate his son, the young man he has never met. When, Daruka, the woman who loved him thirteen years prior, shared that she was pregnant, Ben had walked away and never looked back. Now, he wants to make things right, but will Daruka let him simply walk back into her life? Her son’s life?

A good, single-word description for this novel is “tension”. There’s tension between Larson and Paul over the pregnancy; Ben and Paul over their love for the same woman--Larson; Ben and his illness; Ben and Daruka, as Ben forces his way into her life again; Paul and his murderous brother; and of course, there’s the war in Sudan, which is enough tension all by itself. When the Nile Runs Red is one of the most nail-biting (non-suspense/mystery) novels I’ve read.

DiAnn Mills has, again, done a superb job. She has created a host of lovable characters (even tough-as-nails Ben) and has put a heartbreaking human face to the current suffering in Sudan.

Read it. You’ll be changed forever.
