Title of Book: Refining Emma By Delia Parr BACK COVER: When tragedy befalls the village of Candlewood, Emma Garrett graciously opens the doors of her boardinghouse to those in need. But two guests prove so disagreeable, Emma wonders how she can turn the other cheek- and what will become of the rest of her guests. Adding to the turmoil are the legal problems threatening the title to her house. And when Zachary Breckenwith makes a most surprising- and troubling- announcement, Emma's once-sure foundation is in danger of crumbling. In a season of trial and uncertainty, Emma must discover anew the source of her strength. REVIEWER’S COMMENTS: Refining Emma is the second book in the Candlewood Trilogy. I had not read the first book but after reading this one, I can't wait to read book one. It is the continuing story of Emma Garret, a widow, who owns her own boardinghouse. Emma lives in the boardinghouse with her mother-in-law, a retired minister, his faithful dog, and two young girls who help her run the house. Emma is troubled because she has found out that she doesn't own the boardinghouse. The man who handled the sale for her ran off with the money. Throughout the book, she struggles with how to tell her family and friends because she doesn't want to worry them. She carries her burden alone. In the midst of her trouble, tragedy strikes the town and she must open her boardinghouse to people in need. Many wonderful characters are introduced into the story at this time. Ms. Parr does a wonderful job of developing the personalities of these characters and you feel as if you know them personally by the end of the story. Throughout this story, Emma is a wonderful example of putting others first and showing love to others even when they are unlovable. She reminds us that no matter what we are going through in our lives, there is always someone out there with a greater need. Whenever she was faced with a difficult decision and especially when called upon to do something she didn't want to do, she always prayed and sought God's will before making her decision. I think we can all relate to Emma in this story. There are people out there who we find it very difficult to love but God calls us to love them anyway. We all have tragedy and burdens and Emma sets a good example of turning them over to our Heavenly Father and finding the peace He offers. I loved this book. The descriptions were wonderful and you felt like you actually were sitting by the warm fire while the snow fell softly outside. I had trouble putting the book down and found myself reading til early hours in the morning. I came away from reading this book with a stronger love for others and the desire to try harder to reach out, even to those I don't particularly like. I hope Refining Emma touches your life as it did mine. I can't wait to read other books by this author. |
