Missy Tippens

Missy Tippens Interview

CT: Thanks, Missy, for sharing your day with us during this interview! It's wonderful to see your debut book, Her Unlikely Family, now available at local bookstores.

CT: Please tell us about this book.

MT: It’s published by Steeple Hill Love Inspired. And I sent it there through a contest request! Here’s a blurb:
Opposites attract when an uptight banker encounters a free-spirited waitress during the search for his runaway teenage niece. As they work together to heal the young girl’s damaged spirit, an unlikely family begins to form.

CT: Sounds like a wonderful story. What are some of the spiritual themes you like to write about?

MT: I love to write about how God accepts us for who we really are. God's love is unconditional, and we're able to love because He first loved us. I also love to write about how God answers our prayers even if it's not how we expect them to be answered. And another is that God is with us always, even when we don't know it, even when we feel separated from Him.

CT: What was your reaction to the news Her Unlikely Family had been sold?

MT: I was in total shock! I called my critique partner, Lindi Peterson, and I was talking in a monotone voice and wasn’t jumping up and down shouting like she knew I should be doing. So she laughed at me and told me to call her back when it had sunk in. Once I had called the editor back to accept the offer, I then called Lindi again, ecstatic and floating on the ceiling.

CT: Who was the first person you shared your good news with?

MT: My husband. I arrived home to find a message on the answering machine asking me to call Krista Stroever at Steeple Hill. Well, I knew that wasn’t going to be a rejection! LOL So while I was gathering my wits, my husband arrived home to eat lunch. He got to hear the news as soon as I hung up the phone with Krista. Since I was in shock, he was much more excited than I was!

CT: Do you have an agent?

MT: No, not at this point. I may try again in the future, though.

CT: What was your process in selecting an agent?

MT: I have sent proposals to a few agents, and they were usually agents I had met at a conference. I like meeting them in person to see if we “click.” I think authors really need to research them well to make sure they find someone reputable who knows the publishers that they’ll be wanting to target.

CT: What are you currently working on?

MT: I’m working on another inspirational romance that I would love to sell to Steeple Hill. It’s a story set in a small fictional town in Georgia about a man who comes home to move his grandmother back to Boston with him. But the girl he secretly loved in high school is very close to Granny--they have a ministry together. She doesn’t want Granny to move. And Granny doesn’t want to move. Will he resist the rekindling of old feelings and move Granny up to Boston anyway? Or will he fall in love with the heroine all over again and stay in Georgia?

CT: Hurry and write this one! I would love to read it.

CT: Do you have family at home with you, and if so, how do you juggle them and writing?

MT: I have three children at home from ages 11 to nearly 18. And “juggle” is a great word to use for my life! I also teach, so my days can be pretty crazy. But I wouldn’t trade a minute of it. The kids grow up too fast! My oldest will be going to college in the fall, so I’m trying to enjoy every minute.

CT: I fully agree; we need to relax and enjoy every minute of raising our children. Often times, when we're stretched, it may seem like they'll never grow up. However, they do. It's amazing. :)

CT: If writing could be compared to the four seasons, what season do you feel that you're in at this time?

MT: Great question. I guess it’s the spring, because I’m just getting my start in publishing. After ten years of pursuing publication, it’s so nice to experience the fresh, new spring (my favorite season!).

CT: How has the Lord met you in this season?

MT: The Lord has brought me to this season. I’ve prayed for years that God would bless me by letting me work at home writing books. I’ve had my ladies Bible studies at two different churches praying along with me. And I have to admit, at times I’ve thought about quitting. But every time, God has given me something to encourage me, something that would make me realize He still wants me on this journey. I have to say it was hard to trust at times. But I felt Him leading me toward this point in my life. And I know it’s happened in His perfect timing. I wouldn’t have been ready sooner.

CT: Missy, please share with us one of your favorite Scripture verses and the reason it's meaningful to you.

MT: Here’s a passage that’s been meaningful to me since I realized I was called to write inspirational fiction. From the beginning, I never felt “qualified” to write it. How could God really use me? What could I write about with my limited knowledge? This passage is about Moses in all his whining that he’s not good enough. It concerns his speaking ability, but I’ve always substituted writing ability in there:
Exodus 4:10-12
"10.Moses said to the Lord, 'O Lord, I have never been eloquent, neither in the past nor since you have spoken to your servant. I am slow of speech and tongue.' 11. The LORD said to him, 'Who gave man his mouth? Who makes him deaf or mute? Who gives him sight or makes him blind? Is it not I, the Lord? 12. Now go, I will help you speak and will teach you what to say.'"

CT: This is a wonderful verse. As a writer who often has her doubts, I can identify with Moses and am so thankful that the Lord truly does take our hand and gently guide us along every step of our journey.

CT: Thanks, Missy, for visiting those of us at At Home with Christian Fiction.

MT: Thanks, Catherine, for having me!
