Title of Book: Dreaming in Black & White Dreaming in Black & White, Phoebe Grant Series #1 “But…” I licked the middle of an Oreo. “…that creep is responsible for my losing my job, my apartment, and my life as I knew it. If not for him, I wouldn’t be stuck back here in Barley again.” “Is that such a bad thing?” “Not if you’re a horse or a cow. And only if you want a life beyond mud, manure, and motherhood.” The creep mentioned is Alex Spencer, handsome newspaper mogul who flips Phoebe’s world upside-down when he syndicates the movie review column rather than passing the position onto Phoebe, a current reporter and old time movie enthusiast. Upended and at lose ends, she relents to moving back home with her mother. While Dreaming in Black & White has a full wardrobe of chick lit glamour, I enjoyed Phoebe’s family dynamics most. In one priceless scene Phoebe shows up at her young niece’s first modeling show. Sensitive to the teenager’s shy yet determined nature, Phoebe has worked with Ashley in order to help prepare her for the evening. On stage Ashley is terrified and ramrod stiff near the back of the stage, while her classmates are hissing at her to move. Crouching down, Phoebe creeps across the floor, disregarding the sea of legs and feet, until she’s in Ashley’s direct line of vision. Like any good general, with the welfare of their soldiers in mind, Phoebe stands and begins to click her pen flashlight on and off beneath her chin until her frightened niece sees her. A grin breaks out on the young girl’s face. Regaining her composure, the confident young girl emerges from the background while she struts her stuff with all the pizzazz of a top runway model. Laura Jensen Walker’s book is hip and sentimental at the same time. I laughed out loud several times, all the while thankful that being 30-something and single was a life I left long ago. Laura Jensen Walker has made it fun to revisit those days. I’m looking forward to reading Phoebe’s next adventure in Dreaming in Technicolor. |
