Title of Book: Beloved Castaway By Kathleen Y'Barbo BACK COVER: Isabelle Gayarre was born of dubious parentage. The illegitimate daughter of a rich white gentleman and his quadroon mistress, she was born into a gilded cage – loved and adored but a slave nonetheless. Her only hope was to secure passage to England above The Jude to escape to an English country cottage given to her by her half-sister, Emilie. The cottage—an ocean away from the racist constraints of New Orleans—would give Isabelle a life of freedom. REVIEWER’S COMMENTS: Kathleen Y’Barbo proves herself as an excellent descriptive storyteller in the book of Beloved Castaway. Set in the early 1800’s, Beloved Castaway carries the reader between the backdrops of the balmy Key West and the fog laden shores of New Orleans. Along the seas of the southeast a stormy romance begins to develop between a beautiful slave girl and a man running from both his Heavenly father and his earthly father. Isabelle, treated as a slave from birth, has lived in the constant shadow of her position. Her life is not her own, but her trust in God is unwavering as she flees her past to seek freedom in England. Isabelle seeks refuge aboard an England bound vessel, the Jude, where she meets Captain Josiah Carter. A man not easily moved by emotions, Josiah Carter agrees to allow Isabelle and her companions passage aboard his ship for a heavy fee. Just shortly after Isabelle boards, the Jude faces a raging fire in the New Orleans bay. Fearing for his crew and his ship, which has not yet been paid for, Josiah risks his life to fight the fire and get the Jude safely out of the harbor. Josiah narrowly escapes the fire with his life thus bringing him to a place where he begins to search his heart and his soul. Has God truly been watching out for him despite his running from God? Isabelle’s unwavering faith in all circumstances witnesses to Josiah’s heart and slowly brings him to a place where he begins to seek God’s will. I’d classify this romance as one that warms your soul. On a stormy night with a warm cup of tea, Beloved Castaway is a page turner for sure!
